Fertile Cervical Mucus

Have you ever noticed the changes in your cervical mucus throughout your cycle? Did you know that it’s a predictor of fertility?

It’s normal for your cervical mucus to change in texture, amount and consistency throughout your cycle, its related to hormone fluctuations. Typically your mucus should become creamy leading up to ovulation and then transform into a clear and sticky “egg white” consistency at ovulation during your most fertile window. If you are trying to conceive, this is the optimal time because this cervical mucus will help sperm to fertilize an egg!

How to track your cervical mucus?

  • In the morning observe underwear for any discharge, the amount and the colour

  • Wipe front to back before urinating and note how easily the tissue may have glided, inspect discharge if picked up on tissue

  • Feel the discharge between your thumb and index finger, does it feel sticky? dry? creamy? slippery? does it stretch easily?

  • Note the color, quantity, consistency.

Your most fertile mucus will be clear or slightly milky, it will feel slippery and it will stretch. This appears in your more fertile days leading up to ovulation as estrogen rises and at ovulation when estrogen peaks.

Keep in mind that this is one of the predictors of fertility and there is value in tracking your cervical mucus in addition to your basal body temperature.
